Missionary Keepsake Book

Over the last two years, I've been working on a very special project for my brother-in-law as he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Elder Reese was very diligent about emailing every week during his preparation day and I thought what a perfect way to document the 104 weeks he would be serving across the country in New Jersey.

I started with a large scrapbook, found at Hobby Lobby. I then chose a book of 12x12 card stock to use for the pages and a smaller 5x7 card stock book for tabs and borders. The 12x12 card stock pages were 3-hole punched and a Stampin' Up! punch was used to cut the tabs which were hot glued to the sides of the 12x12 sheets. Once my pages were complete, I was ready to begin.

The next step was to print of the weekly emails and photos. Each email included the subject line and date and helped keep me organized. The photos were all printed the same size, approx. 2x3 inches to keep each week uniform. One photo from the week had a card stock border while each photo from the week had a 1 inche piece of decorative washi tape placed in the corner. I didn't go overboard with cutesy stuff but used three different styles of washi tape to add variety. In the following pictures you can see the process I just described to create each page.

Some weeks had more to include then others, but I still stuck to the one photo framed with scrapbook paper and washi tape in the corner of the photos. Every so often there would be too many photos to fit on just one page, instead of using two pages for that week, I staggered the photos in a "flip book" style. The only downside to this...I wasn't able to use page protectors. I'll need to brainstorm for other ideas so the next book will be able have page protectors. Like I said at the beginning of the post, this book took two years to create and I'd like to think it would stay nice and neat for a long, long time.

An example of the "staggered" photos...

If a week was short and sweet or didn't include any photos, I put a card stock frame and corner washi tape around the email instead.

Because Elder Reese had such clever subjects for each of his emails, I created a Table of Contents to put in the front of his book. Other pages included the title page, with a picture of the missionary president and his wife, letter from the First Presidency, other papers received with his missionary call, pre-missionary photos at the temple and a few pages at the end dedicated to his missionary homecoming.

I really enjoyed putting this scrapbook together. The emails are no longer trapped in a digital folder and the photos, put together with the emails each week, serve as a journal and scrapbook. My biggest advice to share when creating a missionary scrapbook would be to remain consistent with your design and format, 2 years is a long time to have an ongoing project and 104 pages is a lot to tackle. Have fun with the memories and putting your own twist on this memorable gift for your RM.
